Summer Learning

Summer may be in full effect but Grier Academy is in session📚👨🏽‍🎓
I know there’s a balance in safeguarding what RJ learned in Kindergarten and I am here to keep that going.

We are continuing that through the summer with one 15-30 minute session in the morning and one in the afternoon. Sessions include reading, math, Spanish, science, social studies, visits to the library and arts and crafts. We are building the social studies sessions with visits to exciting events and locations that he chooses and following up with a one page report on the visit.

I create his packets from free downloadable worksheets for each subject we have on our list to review. I usually get these from various sites the offer learning plans for each grade level and also get them from his teacher. I also use some of the apps and learning programs that we have for educational purposes. We have been using most of these apps from when he was a toddler and have just changed his level as he gets older.

We have been intentionally teaching him at one grade level ahead of where he is assigned and on the same path leading into First Grade. I can’t be the only parent building in educational activities over the summer. I have no intention of him sitting down and watching TV, video games and getting what i call brain drain during the summer. I am conscious of and work really hard to blend in his summer packets to his schedule without him feeling like he is missing out on something. Sometimes I start feeling guilty that I must be wacky to make so much more work for myself in coming up with a summer learning program and working it in to his schedule.

What I know for sure is that if he is not prepared when school starts it will be harder for him to have a successful and positive year of learning. So basically we can pay now over the summer or pay later. I don’t know about you but I prefer to pay now so Grier Academy will be open every summer.

I would love to hear what some of you are doing to keep your kiddos school ready this summer. I know it may seem wacky to some who say let them just play all summer but I know there’s more moms doing the same thing💕

I will be posting a sample guide over the next fews days along with a list of apps and sites used for his learning plan.

All the best until next time Sandra

XOXO
